The British Guardian newspaper said that a local administration in the state of Uttar Pradesh defied an order issued by the state's Supreme Court and demolished a mosque in one of the most inflammatory measures against a Muslim place of worship since the Babri Mosque was demolished by a mob of Hindu nationalists in 1992.
The mosque, located in the city of Ram Sanshi Ghat in the state of Uttar Pradesh, has withstood at least six decades since the time of British rule, according to documents in his commission's possession.
On Monday, the police and security services entered the area and evacuated people, then brought bulldozers and demolished the mosque and threw rubble into a river, and security services were deployed to prevent anyone from approaching a mile from the place of the mosque.
The Uttar Pradesh state government is under the control of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Jana Party, which also rules at the national level.
The prime minister of the state is considered a hard-line Hindu nationalist, Yuji Adinyanath, known for his vitriolic criticism of Muslims, gave a speech full of Islamophobia, referred to Muslims as terrorists and issued discriminatory legislation overtly against Muslims.
Imam Maulana Abdul Mustafa, a member of the mosque committee, said that the mosque is hundreds of years old and that thousands of people come here five times a day to pray.
All Muslims were afraid, so no one approached or dared protest when the mosque was being demolished. To date, dozens of people are leaving their homes and hiding in other areas for fear of the police.
The demolition of the mosque was a violation of the Supreme Court ruling issued on April 24, which stated that the mosque building should be protected from any evacuation or demolition until May 31.
