Volker Peretz, head of the United Nations Integrated Mission to Support the Transitional Phase in Sudan (UNITAMS), announced that the UN Security Council adopted a resolution extending the mission's mandate until June 3, 2022.
The UN official said - in a press conference held in Khartoum - that the mission will continue to implement the same strategic goals until the end of the transitional period, to implement the mandate of assisting the political transition process in Sudan, supporting the peace agreement, helping to build peace and protecting civilians, and mobilizing economic resources for Sudan. .
He added that the peace process in Sudan needs external financial support, pointing out that he visited Paris and some European countries, and is scheduled to visit the Gulf states and the United States of America, in order to mobilize support to help Sudan build peace, and noted that remarkable progress has been made with regard to the proximity of Sudan's debt relief. accumulated.
Regarding the peace negotiations, Peretz said that the mediation from the state of South Sudan plays an active role in reaching peace between the transitional government and the "Sudan People's Liberation Movement north of Abdel Aziz Al-Hilu."
He added that the two negotiating parties agreed on many points, and the Declaration of Principles, which was signed last March, represents the basis for the negotiation that must be preserved, pledging to continue mediation and the UNAMS mission in bringing positions closer to reach an agreement on various issues in order to reach an agreement as soon as possible.
