The US Embassy in Russia announced the suspension of granting nonimmigrant visas to Russians wishing to travel to the United States, as of Wednesday, May 12.
The US embassy said in a statement published on its website today, Wednesday, that this decision is due to the Russian government's notice issued on April 23, which prohibits the United States embassy in Russia from employing foreign nationals in any capacity.
The US embassy added that the "restrictions" put in place by the Russian government compel it to reduce the number of staff in American consulates by 75 percent.
For its part, the Russian Foreign Ministry said, in response to the US embassy’s complaint about “Russian restrictions,” that before that, US consulates had deliberately procrastinated in providing their services to Russian citizens who waited for months until American entry visas were issued to them.
She pointed out that there is nothing to prevent Washington from filling the "shortage" of workers at the American embassy after the termination of the Russian employees' service, as there are still 250 people who hold American passports, while the number of American embassy employees could reach 455.
