The British Guardian newspaper said that former US President Donald Trump is preparing to tighten his grip on the Republican Party, by removing one of his most prominent critics in a leading position in Congress.
Representative Liz Cheney, the only woman to lead the Republican party in the House of Representatives, is expected to be ousted in a vote by pro-Trump members next week.
Cheney is a hard-line conservative, and she is the daughter of former Vice President George W. Bush. The newspaper argued that removing her from her leadership role for her refusal to repeat what Trump said about the stealing of the presidential election last year would exemplify how the Republican Party remains beholden to the former president.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that the margin of vote that Joe Biden won in the election was the result of fraud, and has attacked Republicans who have refused to deal with that narrative. Trump also joined the Republicans in the House of Representatives in support of Representative Elise Stefanik, a supporter of him, to replace Cheney in the party leadership in the House. A vote is due on the matter by next Wednesday. Stephanic, 36, rose up in the party after her strong defense of Trump Jalal during his impeachment sessions in 2019. Reports indicated that she spoke to the former president by phone on Wednesday.
For his part, Trump said in a statement that Liz Cheney is anonymous and has no work in leading the Republican Party, Elise Stefanic is a much better choice, and she has full and complete support for chairing the Republican Party Congress.
The Guardian says that Kevin McCarthy, the Republican minority leader in the People's Assembly, has found that endorsing Trump offers the party the best chance at restoring the House of Representatives in the midterm elections scheduled for next year.
